One of my favorite quotes about the Husker football goes something like this:
Those inside it can't explain it, those outside can't understand it.
Here are a couple moments in my past where I realized how unusual we are:
I lived in Iowa when they were going to the Rose bowl (to them, it's a big deal, we prefer to play for national championships) and they had discount packages for tickets - like 3 games for $20. Meanwhile we were 25 years into our sold out streak.
I attended a spring game in about 2003 for Illinois - the year after they went to a BCS Sugar bowl. There were maybe 7000 fans, they ran the clock the whole game, no live kicking game, they didn't even go in at half time. I thought I should have brought a bar of soap like the days of "soap scrimmages" at high schools. It was pathetically amateur.
